Bicheno & Surrounds

Bicheno is about 80 kms from St Helens.we stayed here on our last visit but this time we rode there and back for lunch. The Lobster Shack is a great location overlooking the coast and has an  assortment of seafood dishes available for lunch. It was pretty busy when we went (with group of 20) so you may want to make a booking if you intend to come for lunch. Bicheno used to be home to the motorcycle museum but it has since closed down. 
TIP. Invest in an annual parks pass if you visit more than one park. It will save you a motza and even more if you are a senior. We got a seniors annual all parks pass  that covered both bikes and we can visit all parks in Tas while we are here. You will need a pass if you enter any parks and they do check!

The Frecinet National Park is also worth a visit, with many stunning views and areas to visit.  The powder white beaches and pristine coastal environments are rarely seen on the big island, let alone some of the local wildlife like the Eastern Quolls and Red necked Wallabies. No they aren't truck driving gun toting red neck wallabies who have a taste for moonshine!

There is also the blow hole that everyone tries to time the right exposure to catch in its glory and much more to see.

Back towards St Helens there is the Elephant pass. About half way up this hill is a pancake house and when we went in 2018 they had the best pancakes. Unfortunately we didn't stop there this time, so once again we will have to come back for another visit. For a motorbike rider, this road and the St Marys pass are a dream come true. It is very windy, and not to be taken for granted. Be aware of other road users who have a tendency to cut corners.

Horse riding isn’t just for the girls, although being the only guy in a tour group, other than ride leaders, can be a bit daunting. I wondered how I would fit in with a group of 9 females, and was a bit apprehensive to begin with. It was my suggestion to Ann that we did this ride. Cradle Mountain Day 2

The day wasn't what we had been hoping for as rain was forecast  for the first part of the day. We had wanted to do the Dove lake walk again but it would be no fun in the rain. Instead we decided on a leisurely start to the day and stay warm in front of the fire until around 1100 AM, when the rain eased. In a very light drizzle, we made our way to the shuttle bus and went out to the Cradle Mountain Lodge. The plan was to have a lunch here and then do the walk when the weather had cleared. You can drive to the lodge, but why would you when you have paid for the bus anyway.  The lodge itself is very reminiscent of the chalets we had seen in our European trip last year with dorma windows across the roof, and nestled alongside a small lake. The lodge is a very busy place on wet days with everyone clambering for the seat by the fire, regardless of it actually giving  off heat. We snaffled a seat fairly close and settled in for lunch. Hobart Day 2

This was our last full day in Hobart so we wanted to catch up with our mates from the Tas South Sub Branch. They had extended an invitation to anyone still in Tas to join them at the Vet Assistance Centre (VAC) for a sausage sizzle. Somehow my gps stuffed up and wouldn't talk to me with directions and refused to put me on the right road. I managed to eventually fumble my way there and overshot the drive into the VAC. Another U turn in the big beamer and we made it into the park to our awaiting comrades. The President of Tas South, (Pecker) has done an outstanding job of getting the VAC set up in collaboration with the local council. It really is everything this club stands for, and to see all the members there welcoming us made me realise that this is bigger than we ever imagined. We caught up with old and new friends and had a surprise visit from the Mayor of the local council, Brendan Blomely,   who sung the high praises of Pecker and his team.
