Warragamba Dam and Railway Museum

After a reasonable night  at the Value Suites in Penrith we had an easy start to the day. We were going to catch up with some great friends who helped us organised our wedding 10 years ago. It has been 9 years since we have seen Terry, Julie and Coz.

We met them at Terry and Julie's home and we all decided to do some touristy things. The first stop was the Warragamba Dam. This dam supplies Sydney with its drinking water supply. It's capacity is the equivalent of 4 Sydney harbours and is a massive engineering acheivement. The visitor centre is a wealth of information,  videos and interactive displays. One item that caught Ann's attention was the journey of the eels and how they find their way into the Dam after swimming all the way from Vanuatu.
After spending a good hour at least in the visitor centre we went to the Warragamba Workers  club for lunch. It was a good feed at a good price. A certain wife of mine thought she had left her glasses on the table so went back to find them. She was not able to locate them and had resigned herself to the fact they were gone. A quick check of her bag and as if it was magic, they appeared! Crisis averted.
After a scenic drive through the hills we made our way to the NSW railway museum in Thirlmere. This is a great museum for the rail buff and big kids alike. There are some fantastic static displays as well as meticulously restored locomotives and carriages. Coming from a railway town, I recall seeing some of the rolling stock in my youth on display here. This is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
We decided to head back to Penrith via Oran Park, dropping off our friends at Leonay on the way through. Overall it was a good day spent with some great friends.
